Patients who had failing teeth were forced to use a temporary removable denture during the several months of healing. As you may imagine, this is quite a drastic change from having natural teeth to wearing a denture. This is often a difficult transition for many patients.
Patients would have to learn to speak with a denture covering the roof of their mouth. The denture moving over the surgical site would cause added discomfort. Eating can be very challenging with removable teeth, not to mention the worry it may become dislodged while in public or in front of friends and family. The good news is there have been major improvements in implant designs which have allowed us to change our methods and vastly improve the experience.
Modern dental implant techniques have been refined to allow temporary fixed teeth to be immediately fastened to the implants the same day they are placed. Patients no longer need to wear a removable denture during the healing phase. Most patients prefer this option because it avoids the need for wearing a denture as well as the discomfort and insecurity associated with removable teeth.
This technique is most often performed for teeth in the front of the mouth. It can be utilized in the back of the mouth, but due to much heavier biting forces, there is a greater risk of complications.
